Transforming Young Musicians Through Jazz Education That Removes Barriers and Opens Doors
Programs Overview
The Cincinnati Jazz Academy provides high-quality, barrier-free jazz education for Cincinnati Public Schools students in grades 4-12. Rehearsals take place weekly after-school at the Kennedy Heights Arts Center Lindner Annex, 6620 Montgomery Road.
Each student receives a scholarship valued at $3,500 covering all program costs, including group instruction, private lessons, transportation, instruments, and meals. Weekly rehearsals include 90 minutes of ensemble training, and students not already taking private lessons receive one-on-one instruction from experienced instructors. The Academy provides full rhythm section equipment, ensuring all students have access to the tools they need to succeed.
Jazz Academy elementary, junior high, and high school ensembles perform several concerts annually, including the CPS International Jazz Festival at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Advanced combo groups are also offered by audition, providing opportunities for students to work with master guest artists and perform at events locally and throughout the US and abroad.
Admission is by nomination from a CPS music teacher or by direct application and interview, with spaces limited by instrument category. No prior music experience is required—just a commitment to learn.
